It refers to a white egret. According to the commentary on the section on birds in the Literary Expositor (Erya), the white egret is commonly known as lu-si, because the feathers on its head resemble silk threads. According to the Classic of Birds (Qin Jing), when the egret moves its beak, the feathers fold down. The Sea Record (Hai Lu) states that it is also known as dai-si, and later generations added the bird radical. Also, according to Compendium of Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced zi. The meaning is the same.
