Ancient form of the character sou.
According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) and Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is sāo; according to the Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui) and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), the pronunciation is sāo.
In the Erya (Erya), section on explanations of instruction (Shixun), it states: sāo sāo refers to the sound of washing rice. The commentary says: the sound of washing rice. The sub-commentary says: the Book of Odes (Shijing), Great Odes (Daya) section, mentions the sound of washing. The commentary states: explaining the washing of rice. It is the sound of sou sou. The pronunciations of sāo and sou are different, but the meaning is the same. Note that in current editions of the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written as sou sou.
According to the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is sōu. The meaning is the same. Commonly written as sōu.

The commentary says: explains the washing of rice. Here, in accordance with the original text, the character for washing has been amended.
