Broad Rhymes (Guangyun): Sun jü.
Explanation of Names (Shiming): An object used for hanging drums. The horizontal piece is called sun. Sun signifies height, as it appears prominent when positioned at the top. The vertical piece is called jü. Jü signifies lifting, as it supports the sun from the side. The wooden board above the sun is called ye, carved into tooth-like shapes and arranged unevenly like saw teeth.
Book of Rites (Liji), Hall of Distinction (Mingtang wei): The dragon sun and jü of the Xia Dynasty.
Commentary: Sun and jü are devices used for hanging bells and stone chimes. The horizontal sun is decorated with images of scaled animals. The vertical jü is decorated with images of naked animals or birds.
Also pronounced zhuan. A bamboo vessel.
Book of Rites (Liji), Record of Mourning (Sang da ji): Eating within the sun. Xu Miao reads it this way.
Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun): In the Artificers' Record (Kaogong ji), it is written as sun. It is also written as xun.
