Pronounced shi. A type of bamboo. According to the Classic of Extraordinary Spirits (Shenyi jing), the screen bamboo is also known as Supreme Ultimate (Taiji); it grows to a height of one hundred feet, with a circumference of twenty-five to twenty-six feet, and is used by southern peoples to build boats.
Also refers to a bamboo implement. It has holes to sift materials, removing the coarse and keeping the fine. In the Biography of Jia Shan in the History of the Former Han (Qian Han shu), it is written: Sifting earth to construct the Afang Palace. The commentary by Shigu notes: A sifter is made from bamboo.
Pronounced sa (level tone). Used to remove coarse elements and retain the fine. In the Correct Rhymes (Zheng yun), it is also written in variant forms (shi) and (sai).
