Pronounced shen (rising tone). According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced the same as the character for pointing or speaking (shen). According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), smiling without changing one's facial expression is called shen. The character is composed of the lacking radical (qian) with the omitted form of pull (yin) serving as the phonetic component. In the Book of Song (Songshu), Biography of Wang Hong, it is noted that when Sun Shu'ao had not yet attained success, You Meng smiled at him. Zhan Ji (Liuxia Hui) remained in a humble position, and Zang Wenzhong was ridiculed for this reason. It is also written in a variant form (shen). It also refers to a type of tree. In the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), it is written that the trees on Mount Bing are mostly shen trees and niu trees. Also, according to the Expanded Rhymes (Guangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced yin (rising tone). The meaning is the same.
