According to Collections of Rhymes (Jiyun) and Treasury of Rhymes (Yunhui), pronounced shang. According to Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced shang. Equivalent to the variant form. In Refined Conversations (Boya), shang means to cook. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Treatise on the Feng and Shan Sacrifices: All tasted the cooked offerings to the supreme deity and spirits. Commentary: Xu Guang says, shang means to cook. In Commentary on the Treatise on Suburban Sacrifices in the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), Shigu says, shang means to cook for the purpose of sacrifice. The Han school of the Book of Odes (Shijing) quotes the passage from the Capping of Mugwort poem: To cook it, using only the tripod and the cauldron.
