In the Book of Records of Good Fortune (Ganlu Zishu), the character meaning to wind around (rao) is interchangeable with the variant form (rao). It is also a surname. In the Zuo Commentary to the Spring and Autumn Annals (Zuozhuan), during the thirteenth year of Duke Wen, it is mentioned that Rao Chao gave a bamboo slip as a gift. The commentary notes that Rao Chao was a high official of the State of Qin. Also pronounced rao (even tone). The character meaning to disturb (nao) is sometimes written in this variant form (rao).
