According to Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Gathering (Yunhui), and Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun), the pronunciation is xu. It means to exorcise, to expel, to drive away, or to disperse. In the Biography of Er Kuan from the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it is written: To seal the sacrifices and report completion, revealing and dispersing to heaven and earth. The commentary by Li Qi states: Qu means to open and disperse what is closed. It also means strong and healthy. In the Odes of Lu from the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written: With carriages strong and sturdy. According to Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also written as qu. According to the Supplement to the Rhyme Gathering (Yunhui Xiaobu), qu is the same as the variant character qu. This is seen in the commentary to the Xunzi.
