According to the Discussion of Writing (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the act of chopping or shaving.
In the Literary Expositor (Erya), section on implements, the term qúzhú is defined as dìng.
The commentary notes it is a type of tool related to the hoe.
The sub-commentary explains that dìng refers to a weeding tool.
In the Categorized Compilation (Leipian), it is sometimes also written in a variant form.
