According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is qu. According to the Explanation of Scripts and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen), it refers to a type of turtle dove. According to the Literary Expositor (Erya), in the section explaining birds, it states that the bird is a turtledove, also known as a kestrel-dove. The commentary by Guo Pu notes that it resembles a mountain magpie but is smaller.
Additionally, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is qu. According to the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), there is a bird on Mount Macheng that resembles a crow, with a white head, blue body, and yellow feet; it is called a quju, and consuming it prevents hunger.
