Pronounced jǔ. Pronounced guǒ. Pronounced jǔ (rising tone), sound is identical to the character meaning square.
Shuowen Jiezi (Analysis of Characters and Explanation of Words) defines it as feathers that are curved.
Erya (Approaching Elegance), section on animals, records: If a horse has white front hooves, it is called xi. If a horse has white hind hooves, it is called qu.
The sub-commentary states: If both hind feet are white, it is called qu.
