Ganga: A river name.
Records of the Western Regions in the Great Canon (Dazang Xiyu Ji) states: Lake Anavatapta is located south of Fragrant Mountain and north of the Great Snow Mountain, measuring eight hundred li in circumference. The river flowing southeast into the great sea is called the Ganga River; the river flowing southwest into the great sea is called the Vakshu River; the river flowing northwest into the great sea is called the Sita River. There is another branch that flows underground, emerges from Jishi Mountain, and flows northeast into the sea; this is the source of the Yellow River in China.
The Buddhist scriptures state that Ganga means heaven in the Chinese language. See Collection of Translated Names (Fanyi Mingyi Ji).
