Wu Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Sickness (bìng) Grave (jiào) Kangxi Strokes: 17 Page 780, Entry 26 Compendium of Rhymes (Jiyun) and Orthography of Rhymes (Zhengyun) state that the pronunciation is qiao. It is identical to the character for withered or wan. Also, per Compendium of Rhymes (Jiyun) and Collection of Rhymes (Yunhui), the pronunciation is jiao. Compendium of Rhymes (Jiyun) defines this as illness. Generalized Annotations (Boya) defines this as to shrink. Explication of Text (Shiwen) records the pronunciation as jiao. Treatise on Rites and Music from the History of the Former Han (Qian Han Shu Liyue Zhi) states: This is why the delicate and withered sounds of distress arise, and the people are filled with worry. The commentary notes that withered and shrunken refers to diminishing and contracting. The pronunciation is jiao.
