According to the Tang Dynasty Rhyme Dictionary (Tangyun), the pronunciation follows the fanqie of fu and bei. In the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), the fanqie is pan and bei, sounding like pei. Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines the character as having strength. The Book of Odes (Shijing) uses it in the line: With chariots so numerous and strong. It also means many or numerous. The Collected Rhymes also records the fanqie of pin and bei with the same meaning. It is sometimes written in a variant form pronounced pi. Dapi is the name of a mountain. The Classic of History (Shangshu) states in the Tribute of Yu section: Passing east of the Luonui and arriving at Dapi. The Commentary by Cai (Caizhu) notes: This is the mountain located by the river in Liyang County of the current Tongli Army. Mr. Lu wrote the name as Dapi. It also has the fanqie of bu and mei, sounding like bei; the fanqie of pu and mei, sounding like pei; the fanqie of bu and bi, sounding like fou; and the fanqie of pu and bi, sounding like pi. The meanings are all the same.
