According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the marsh crab.
According to the Notes on Past and Present (Gujin Zhu), the marsh crab is a small crab that lives in the mud along the seashore and feeds on earth. It is also known as a long ji. One variety with a single large pincer is called an embrace-sword. It is also known as a torch-holder. It is also called a peng-wa.
According to the Erya (Erya), the wa and the ze are types of crabs; the small ones are called peng. The commentary states that this refers to the peng-wa, which resembles a crab but is smaller. It is sometimes written in a variant form (péng).
