Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) writes it as the character composed of the sun radical and the character meaning side-by-side, signifying a sun without color. Note: When the sun lacks brightness, far and near appear the same, hence it follows the character for side-by-side. It is currently written as pu.
Also, according to the Guangyun (Guangyun), it means extensive, great, or universal.
Book of Changes (Yijing), Hexagram Qian: Seeing the dragon in the field, its virtue is spread universally.
Also a surname. The Book of Surnames (Xingshi Jijiu Pian) mentions the Pu clan, which is found among the ten surnames of the Later Han dynasty.
Also, according to the Jiyun (Jiyun) and the Yunhui (Yunhui), pronounced pu (rising tone). Same meaning as above.
