Pronounced pu. In Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is defined as pressing down and holding with the hand. Another interpretation is to stretch out or to disperse. In the Biography of Prince Jing of Zhongshan from the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it appears in the phrase "dust and dirt spread and cover." In the Biography of Wang Mang, it appears in the phrase "the poetry of the fifteen states, spread throughout the nine provinces." It also carries the meaning of to strike.
