Pronounced pi.
In the Discussion of Script (Shuowen), it is a drum used while riding. In the Explanations of Names (Shiming), it is said that the pi is for assistance; it assists in setting the rhythm for the drums. In the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Office of Summer, Grand Marshal, the troop leader holds the pi. Also, in the middle of winter, during the grand military review, the central army uses the pi to signal the drums. The Master Lu's Spring and Autumn Annals (Lüshi Chunqiu) states that Emperor Ku ordered people to create the music of drums and pi.
Additionally, in the Book of Jin (Jinshu), Records of Music, there is the pi dance. In the preface to Cao Zhi's Poem on the Pi Dance, it is mentioned that in the Western Garden ensemble of Emperor Ling of Han, there was one named Li Jian who was skilled in the pi dance.
It is also used interchangeably with the word for lute (pi). In the In Search of the Supernatural (Soushenji), the lute is written as pi po.
