As defined in Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), the wenbi is a type of fish. According to Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), the Lan River flows west into the Han River, where there are many bi fish; they are shaped like an inverted scoop, with a bird head, fish wings, and a fish tail, and their sound is like the ringing of stone chimes. According to Guo Pu's Rhapsody on the Yangtze River (Jiang Fu), the patterned bi fish rings like a chime and contains jade. Some texts also write this using a variant form. Additionally, according to Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also pronounced bi (rising tone), referring to a type of fish with a venomous tail.
