Ancient script. According to Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), the pronunciation is nǔ (rising tone). According to Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Anthology (Yunhui), the pronunciation is nǔ (rising tone).
According to Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to a stone that can be used for arrowheads.
Classic of History (Shujing), Tribute of Yu (Yu Gong) states: Grindstones, whetstones, arrowhead stones, and cinnabar.
Discourses of the States (Guoyu) states: Confucius said, the Sushen tribe presented wooden arrows with stone heads, measuring one foot and eight inches.
