Guangyun (Broad Rhymes) pronounces it nán. Jiyun (Collected Rhymes) pronounces it ní, similar to the sound of nǎn. Yupian (Jade Chapters) defines it as soft, murmuring speech. Guangyun notes it was originally written as the character nán (variant form), meaning to speak in a low voice. Jiyun defines it as the sound of low-voiced speech.
