It resembles a soft-shelled turtle, lacking a shell but possessing a tail, with its mouth located on its abdomen. The Broadening of Refinements (Guangya) states that it is the same as the salamander (ni). The Jade Chapters (Yupian) states that it is a type of whale. The Regional Products of the Yi Territory (Yibu Fangwu Lue) records that the fish is produced in valleys and the Ya River; it possesses feet and is capable of climbing trees, and its call resembles the crying of an infant. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Sima Xiangru mentions the term yu yu ao na. The commentary by Xu Guang states that for na, some editions write the variant character (ta). The Commentary on the Book of Han (Hanshu Zhu) states that na is the same as the anchovy (ti). The anchovy may be the same as the salamander.
