Guangyun (Guangyun) states: Clamorous noise.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes of the Kingdom: The guests are already intoxicated, shouting and clamoring noisily.
Jiyun (Jiyun) notes it is sometimes also written in a variant form (zhuan).
Also pronounced na. Referring to clamor and noisy disturbance.
According to Tang Yun Zheng (Tang Yun Zheng), the archaic pronunciation is nuo, which should be reclassified under the mo rhyme. In the Book of Odes (Shijing) passage, it rhymes with the following line containing the character dou. Dou, in archaic pronunciation, is read as tian, with level and departing tones sharing the same rhyme.
Wang Bao, Tong Yue (Contract with a Servant): Do not permit riding horses or carriages when coming and going, sitting with legs splayed and shouting loudly, shaking the head when getting off the bed, or going to cut grass and weave hemp rope. The character tou in archaic pronunciation is read as tu.
