According to Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it is a tool for weeding. Some editions write it with the Metal radical. In the Xiaokuang chapter of Guanzi, it mentions carrying their spears, sickles, nuonuo, and hoes, among other agricultural implements. According to Expanded Rhymes (Guangyun), the shape of the nuonuo is like a shovel, with a handle three feet long and a blade two inches wide, used for piercing the soil to remove weeds. Same as dou.
