According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and the Compendium of Rhymes (Yunhui), pronounced nie. In the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it denotes two feet unable to pass one another. According to the Commentary of Guliang (Guliang Zhuan) on the twentieth year of Duke Zhao, when two feet cannot pass one another, the people of Qi call it qi, the people of Chu call it ni, and the people of Wei call it zhe. In the Explanations of Text (Shiwen), ni refers to feet joined together and unable to move apart.
