Explaining the term as a moan or groan in the Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters). The Book of Odes (Shijing) states: The people are currently groaning. Note that in the current version of the Lesser Odes (Xiaoya), this is written as dianshi. See the detailed annotation for the preceding character. The Guangyun (Broad Rhymes) also writes it as dian.
