The Jade Chapters (Yupian) defines it as to pare or shave.
The Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) defines it as to divide.
The Supplemented Rhymes (Zengyun) defines it as to be incisive or to cut.
In the Book of Han (Hanshu), within the Eulogy for the Biography of Jia Shan, the term is used in the context of offering pointed advice from a lower position to a superior.
A note by the scholar Meng Kang states that the term refers to providing blunt or earnest counsel.
