Pronounced men. According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), and Rhyme Compilation (Yunhui), the pronunciation is the same as the character for gate.
The Analytical Dictionary of Chinese Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines this as the color of jade. Red sprouts among grain are called men, and this character refers to jade that possesses the color of these red sprouts.
In the Book of Odes (Shijing), within the section Odes of Wang, it is written, his fur garment is like red jade. The Commentary (Zhuan) notes that this character means red.
According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also pronounced man. The meaning is the same.
In the Classified Compilation (Leipian), it is sometimes written in a variant form (yun). It is also written in another variant form.
