Yupian (Jade Chapters): The term mei refers to the area above the heart and below the mouth.
Guangyun (Broad Rhymes): The meat along the sides of the spine.
Zhengzitong (True Character Mastery): Mei is the same as the spine. The heart is tied to the spine to settle the divine light and manage myriad affairs.

Sub-commentary: Zixia's Commentary on the Book of Changes states: That which is on the spine is called mei. Ma states: Mei is the back. Zheng states: Mei is the meat of the spine. Wang states: Mei is located on the back and flanks the spine. Although these explanations differ, generally they all refer to the area above the heart.
