According to the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun) and other rhyme dictionaries, it is pronounced mao. It means to be jealous or resentful. In the Great Learning (Daxue), the phrase meaning to be jealous and detest someone uses this word. In the Book of Documents (Shujing), specifically in the Qin Oath (Qinshi) chapter, it is written with a different character that is also pronounced mao. In the Balanced Discourses (Lunheng) by Wang Chong, there is an expression referring to a jealous husband and a resentful wife. Another interpretation is to be angry or to refuse to look at one another. The Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), in the Biography of the Five Families, records that when Prince Xian was critically ill, his queen did not attend to him frequently due to her jealousy. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also pronounced mao, mei, or mao. According to the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is also pronounced mei or mo. All these variations share the same meaning.
