The pronunciation is mài. From Shuowen, it means to exert oneself. Book of Documents (Shangshu), 'Establishing Government': "to exert oneself in assisting our state." Also, from Yunhui, it is interchangeable with mài. Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan) quotes the Book of Documents: "Gao Yao (Gāo Yáo) exerted himself in cultivating virtue." The commentary states it means "to exert oneself."
