From Records of Ancient and Modern Matters (Gujin Zhu): A temple is an appearance; it serves to represent the form of one's ancestors. From Explanations of Names (Shiming): The place where the form and appearance of ancestors reside. From Jade Treasury (Yupian): Ancestral temple. From Literary Expositor (Erya): A hall with eastern and western side rooms is called a temple. Note: This refers to the flanking rooms and the front hall. Commentary: Any large hall that has side rooms and a front hall with partition walls is called a temple. From Records of the Six Scripts (Liushu Gu): The area in front of a palace is called a temple, and the area behind it is called a sleeping chamber. This corresponds to the front hall of a king's palace or the reception hall of an official today. The Instructions of Yu (Yu Zhen) state: The people have their sleeping chambers and temples. The Commentary (Zhuanshu) states: Rats do not burrow in sleeping chambers or temples, as they fear humans. This is similar to later terminology such as temple court or temple hall.
