According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is synonymous with the character for hair. In the Book of Documents (Shangshu), chapter Oath at Mu, it refers to the people of the Yong, Shu, Qiang, Mao, Wei, Lu, Peng, and Pu states. The commentary notes that these eight states were all subject to King Wen, and that Mao and Wei were located in the Ba and Shu regions. In the sub-commentary to the Book of Odes (Shijing), chapter Corner Bow (Jiaogong), it is stated that the sounds and meanings of Mao and the character for hair are identical. According to the Literary Expositor (Erya), chapter Explaining Words (Shigu), the term for dense vegetation is related to mao. The commentary states this refers to grass and trees growing in a tangled, thick, and shaded manner. Also pronounced mo. In the Sword Gate Inscription (Jianmen Ming) by Liu Zongyuan: Bordered by mountains to form a gate, encircling the capital of Shu, where steep terrain accumulates goods, and the Qiang and Mao tribes are merged together.
