Tang Dynasty Rhyme Dictionary (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Dictionary of Rhymes (Yunhui), and Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun) state the pronunciation is mao (falling tone). According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to the part of a garment above the belt. It also refers to width and length. East-west dimension is called width (guang), and north-south dimension is called length (mao). In the Western Capital Rhapsody (Xijing Fu) by Zhang Heng, it is written: Measuring the diameter of the wheels and examining the width and length. It also means long according to the Broad Refinement (Boya). According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also pronounced mou (rising tone). The Classified Chapters (Leipian) defines it as a long garment. The Jade Chapters (Yupian) notes that the large seal script (zhuan) form is written differently.
