According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the heartwood of a pine tree.
In the Records of the Grand Historian: Western Regions Account (Qianhan Xiyu Zhuan), it is noted that the Wusun kingdom has many pine and man trees.
Also refers to the appearance of resin exuding.
In the Zhuangzi: Human World (Zhuangzi Renjianshi), it is written: if used for doors and windows, the resin exudes like man.
Sima Biao comments: the sap darkens and exudes, appearing as man-man.
