To capture and plunder.
Commentary by Jin Zhuo in the Book of Han (Hanshu) states: To capture someone alive is called lu, while to behead them is called huo.
Also a place name.
Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijingzhu) states: The Zi River flows eastward through the old city of Linzi County. Its outer wall is the city to which Duke Xian of Jin relocated, commonly referred to by people of the world as Lu City.
Correct Forms of the Six Scripts (Liushu zheng'e) states: When capturing prisoners alive, they were bound and restrained with ropes, which is why the character is composed of the elements for a string and strength. The common variant form written with the character for man is incorrect.
