Hai Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Bird (niǎo) Character: lai Kangxi strokes: 19 Page 1493, Entry 20 Pronounced lai (level tone). According to the Book of Songs and Rhymes (Guangyun) and Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is lai. In the Er Ya, Explanation of Birds, it is written as the bird name ying-lai. The commentary notes that lai is an error for the character shuang. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), it is written as shuang-jiu. According to the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Office of Autumn, there exists the official title of the Master of the Shuang-jiu. In the seventeenth year of Duke Zhao of the Zuo Tradition, the Viscount of Tan explains that the Shaohao dynasty used bird names to designate official titles, and the Master of the Shuang-jiu was an official in charge of laws. Du Yu comments that the shuang-jiu is the eagle. Because it is fierce, it is put in charge of laws. Since the Er Ya mistakenly wrote it as lai, various rhyme dictionaries changed the pronunciation to lai, which is particularly incorrect.
