Explanation of Characters (Shuowen): Husi. Husi-lao means to feel attached to or to cherish.
Han Yu's Poems: Feeling moved by things increases attachment and regret. Also, among entertainers, a visiting lover is called husi-lao.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Lu Buwei: He sought the great Yin man Lao Ai to be his retainer.
Explication of the Hidden (Suoyin): In the language of scholars, to curse debauchery is to say Lao Ai. Another interpretation states that Lao is a surname.
Kongzi Family Conversations (Kongcongzi), Discussion of Power: Zishun said to the King of Wei: Even if within the four borders of Qin, those in power and below ask if one is with the Lao clan or with the Lu clan. Because the great Yin man with the Lao surname was dissolute, he is called Lao Ai.
