Book of Filial Piety (Erya), Explanation of Water: A large rope.
Commentary: Sun Yan says: A large rope. Li Xun says: A rope woven from bamboo used to secure boats.
Also, Name Interpretations (Shiming): Lowering a coffin into a tomb is called lü. Lü refers to the act of pulling slowly to lower the coffin gradually.
Book of Rites (Liji), Tan Gong, Commentary on the official state seeing the feng: Feng is crafted from hewn large timber, shaped like a stone, erected at the four corners of the outer casket, with a hole in the center to install a windlass; during burial, it is wound with lü.
Sub-commentary: To wind with lü, where lü is the same as a pulling rope; one end is tied to the coffin seal, and the other is tied to the windlass.
Also, Zhang Heng, Western Capital Rhapsody (Dongjing fu): Adorned with lü belts and girdles.
Commentary: The lü is made of dressed leather, used to cushion jade objects.
