The original form was a character composed of the radical Strength (lì) and a component resembling Fei, with Lu as the phonetic component. Sometimes also written as 勴. According to Erya Commentary (Ěryǎ zhù), lǚ means to praise and encourage. Not assisting with physical strength, but assisting with one's heart/mind.
