Pronounced ta (entering tone). The name of a river. According to the Book of Han: Geography Treatise (Qianhan Dili Zhi), the Luo River originates in Dongwuyang County of Dong Commandery. Also, Luoyin is the name of a county belonging to Pingyuan Commandery; in the Han dynasty, there was a Marquis of Luoyin. Also, chuluo describes the appearance of water collecting together. As written in Sea Rhapsody (Hai Fu) by Mu Hua: surging and collecting.
Also, pronounced lei (rising tone). The name of a river, originating in Yanmen. Sometimes written as a variant form (lei). According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), the original form was written as wet, or simplified as a variant. Later, because the character for wet was used for the concept of dry and wet, it was subsequently transcribed as the character Luo. The right side of the character consists of the sun symbol over the silk symbol.
