Pronounced liè.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is written as a variant form, referring to a species of juniper.
According to the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun), it is the same as the ér tree. In the Jiangdong region, it is called the ér-li, and in the state of Chu, it is called the máo-li.
According to the Commentary on the Erya by Lu Ji: Its leaves resemble those of the elm tree, its grain is tough and reddish, and it can be used to make shafts for carriages.
Ouyang Xiu also noted: It refers to the bracket supports placed upon the roof beams.

According to the Book of Odes (Shijing), Great Odes: They grow as thickets, they grow as tangled trees.
The Commentary states: Trees that grow in rows are called lì.
