According to the Treatise on Miscellaneous Things (Bowuzhi), it was obtained by Zhang Qian upon his return from his diplomatic mission to the Western Regions. According to the Extensive Refinements (Boya), the ruoliu is the pomegranate. Its red fruits hang down in clusters, resembling swellings or tumors. According to Zuo Si in the Rhapsody on the Capital of Shu (Shu Du Fu), the pomegranate fruits split open. According to Cui Bao in Notes on Past and Present (Gujin Zhu), it is also called danruo. Additionally, liuliu is the name of a beast. According to the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), there is a beast on Yin Mountain that resembles a wild cat, and its cry sounds like liuliu.
