The character shape is composed of person, hair, and spoon, indicating the meaning of hair and beard turning white. Book of Rites (Liji): At seventy, one is called old and should entrust family affairs to descendants. Gongyang Commentary (Gongyang Zhuan): Sent elderly people to pacify. Commentary: Sixty years is called die, seventy is called old.
