Pronounced lan.
Pronounced lan.
Synonymous with the form lan.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to be lax or sluggish. It also denotes laziness. One source suggests it refers to lying down. It is also written in the variant forms (lan) and (lan).
Pronounced lai.
Refers to detesting or disliking.
Pronounced lian.
From the poem Xianyan Pavilion by Su Zhe: The precarious pavilion stands on the mountainside, scenery shifts as one walks. This joy is known only to oneself, passersby may feel as they please and be lazy.
Note: The Corrected Character Comprehensive Guide (Zhengzitong) states: The character lan does not exist in the Six Writings. It claims that the definition of lan is the same as the form lan, and that lan is merely a common vulgar form of lan, but this assertion is incorrect. The original form of lan is derived from the component lai.
