In the History of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu), Biography of Wang Dan: Every year during the busy farming season, Wang Dan would load his carriage with wine and food and go to the fields to wait for those who were working diligently and reward them. Those who were lazy and indolent felt ashamed because they did not receive such rewards. Wang Dan would oversee both groups, urging them on and encouraging himself.
Textual research: In the History of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu), Biography of Wang Dan, every year during the busy farming season, Wang Dan would load his carriage with wine and food and go to the fields to wait for the diligent and reward them; those who were lazy felt ashamed because they did not receive such rewards. According to the original text, the character for at (yu) is added before the term for fields. The phrase for industrious suffering is changed to waiting for the diligent. The character for lazy is changed to the variant form duo. The character for shame is changed to the variant form chi. The character for arrive is changed to its variant. The six characters indicating that Dan would oversee the labor and encourage himself are added to complete the meaning of the passage.
