According to the Sound Dictionary (Jiyun), the character for dried meat is sometimes written in a variant form (là).
As recorded in Annals of Master Yan (Yanzi Chunqiu), Inquiry into the Past: Duke Jing ordered his troops to engage in construction work during the month of the winter sacrifice, but because of the extreme cold and ice, many suffered from hunger and cold, and the work remained incomplete.
Also refers to beeswax. According to Commentary on Past and Present (Gujin Zhu), in regions with mountains that produce beeswax, people use wooden vessels with small holes drilled into them and coat the inside and outside of the vessels with beeswax.
Also refers to wax-cloth. According to Commentary on Past and Present (Gujin Zhu), the Book of Zhou (Zhoushu) states: The Kunwu clan presented a knife capable of carving jade, cutting through jade as if it were wax-cloth.
