In ancient texts, the character for assembly (huì) was sometimes used as a loanword for this term. According to the commentary on the Biographies of the Money-makers in the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), a horse dealer is called a broker. The character for assembly (huì) is also a synonym for broker.
