According to the Broad Rimes (Guangyun), Collected Rimes (Jiyun), Collected Rimes (Yunhui), and Correct Rimes (Zhengyun), this character is the same as the character pronounced jǐng, meaning a well. According to Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), eight families share one well; the character depicts the structure of the well frame, and the dot represents the bucket. Xu states it refers to the well wall. The Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) refers to this as the well tree. In ancient times, jars were used to draw water. The character was originally written in this form and later simplified to the standard form for well. It is also a surname. Furthermore, according to the Collected Rimes, it is pronounced dǎn, representing the sound of an object being thrown into a well.
