According to the Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters), it is a type of muntjac. The character represents the general name for the species.
According to the Erya (Approaching Elegance), which is a glossary of animals, the male of this species is called yu, the female is called zi, the young is called xu, its tracks are called jie, and when it is very strong it is called jian. The commentary states that this distinguishes the categories of this species.
According to the Piya (Augmented Elegance), both deer and this animal are agile and easily frightened, but this animal has a particularly timid nature; when it drinks water, it flees at the sight of its own reflection.
According to the Book of Odes (Shijing): In the wilds there is a dead muntjac, wrapped in white cogon grass.
According to the Book of Rites (Liji): Dried muntjac meat.
